George Plante's father passes

After a long health struggle, Mr Plante's father passed away this past week. We give thanks to God for his long and faithful life. George was privileged to preach the funeral sermon on Saturday. Please remember the Plante family in your prayers.

ministerial conference & presbytery trip highlights

This past week, Mr Gallant, Mr Soles, and Mr Wattel went to Moscow, Idaho, to attend a ministerial conference, followed by presbytery in Seattle, Washington.

The ministerial conference was on pop culture, and featured Douglas Wilson, Nathan Wilson, Ken Myers, and Peter Leithart as speakers. An audio version of the lectures has been ordered for the church.

At the presbytery meeting, Christ Covenant Church of Grande Prairie, sponsored by Christ Covenant Church of Langley, was unanimously granted candidate status in the CREC, along with a number of other congregations. We will be eligible for full membership at next year's presbytery meeting. We are grateful to the Lord for the extension of this right hand of fellowship.

The CREC is growing very rapidly; this year Augustine Presbytery (the eastern presbytery of the federation) upgraded seven churches from candidate status to new full membership, and added seven more as candidate congregations. Anselm Presbytery, where we are, is showing similar growth.

Christmas party information

Our Christmas party will be Friday, December 1 at 6 p.m. at the Christian School. A Christmas program and dessert will follow our Christmas supper. For general information regarding the evening, please contact Bonita Callahan. For participation in the program, please call Val Soles by Nov 19. Meal preparation questions should be directed to Rosalyn Plante.

summary of October 16 council meeting

All council members were present.

Here are some highlights:

  • The upcoming presbytery meeting was discussed.
  • It was decided to commence church education sessions at the beginning of November. Please note that we are going to try out a schedule change. It will look like this:

    2:30 p.m. - church education time (30 minutes)
    3:15 p.m. - worship service

Thus we will still be beginning our program at 2:30, but the worship service itself will be pushed back. The church education time will alternate from week to week: one week, we will have singing instruction, concluding with a brief time for prayer; the following week, we will have a lesson.
  • Mr Gallant will present the first set of lessons, on the theme "Living Like a Human Being." This will focus upon applying some of the basic realities we are taught in Genesis 1 - 3, in terms of how God has created us as human beings, as well as how that is affected by the fall. Should be practical; we'll do this a few weeks and see how it goes.
  • Council reflected upon Brian Burkhart's counsel given to us last week regarding church planting, and in particular discussed approaches to evangelism. This will be talked about further.
  • Next meeting will take place Monday, October 30.

prayer requests

Please be sure to pray for Hester Van Braeden, who was hurt quite seriously in a cycling accident last weekend, and is recovering quite slowly.

We had a good first Body & Soul youth group this past Thursday. Give thanks to God for a good start, and continue to pray for the leaders and the kids, that these times would be not only fun but deeply beneficial.

  • Our next council meeting will be next Monday, October 10.
  • Council has invited Pastor Brian Burkhart (Webster Community Church) to speak to us about church planting on Sunday, October 15. Mr Burkhart has had extensive experience in this area, and we expect a fruitful time of learning. Be there!
